September 2006 Maryland Shriner Health Tip
September is Prostate Cancer Month, Let reach out and help those we love and those we work with, and socialize with here are the facts:
Prostate cancer is the third leading cause of cancer death among men in Maryland and, over the past decade, has been the most commonly diagnosed cancer other than non-melanoma skin cancer.
In 2006, the American Cancer Society projects about 4,300 new cases of prostate cancer among men residing in Maryland, and that approximately 500 Maryland men will die from the disease during the same period.
Most prostate cancers develop in older men with more than 70% of all prostate cancer cases diagnosed in men older than 65.
Many prostate cancers are slow-growing, do not produce symptoms, and may never be life-threatening while other prostate cancers may progress and spread rapidly.
Men who are African American, of African descent, and men who have a brother or father with prostate cancer are at increased risk.
Encourage men and significant others to talk with their health care providers about whether to get screened for prostate cancer, and, if indicated, whether to have further testing and treatment.
