It has a staggering 10% of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbd.int\/countries\/profile?country=co\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>world\u2019s biodiversity<\/b><\/span><\/a><b>.<\/b> Also, Colombia is the only <span class=\"s1\"><b>South American country<\/b><\/span> with coastline in the Pacific and Atlantic Ocean. You can discover intrepid rivers like the Ca\u00f1o Cristales with five colors.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Besides natural beauty, Colombia is passionate about its abundant culture, friendly people, and plenty of destinations to explore. Colombia loves music and is famous for having 1,000 <a href=\"https:\/\/colombia.co\/en\/colombia-country\/colombia-land-thousand-rhythms\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span class=\"s2\"><b>rhythms<\/b><\/span><\/a>. All 27 departments have a unique history. It\u2019s the second biggest in South America with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.worldometers.info\/world-population\/colombia-population\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>53 million people<\/b><\/span><\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Colombia is absolutely worth visiting. Backpackers, luxury travelers, digital nomads, and Colombia tour groups can all appreciate Colombia.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\"><b>Is Colombia safe for travel?<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Generally speaking, yes, Colombia is perfectly fine for international travelers. Please be aware the federal government has been engulfed in a lengthy conflict with different paramilitary groups. However, most fighting is far from primary tourist areas. Major visitor hubs like Cartagena, Bogot\u00e1, and Medell\u00edn carry low risk.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><b><i>Pro tip:<\/i><\/b> Keep up with Colombian current events before booking a trip. Follow your local Travel Advisory page for updated information. There are resources to <a href=\"https:\/\/justiceforcolombia.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>track the armed conflict<\/b><\/span><\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Although Colombia welcomes foreigners, you should always be smart with your surroundings. A common Colombian idiom is <i>\u201cNo dar papaya.\u201d<\/i> This means never let your guard down. Theft, scams, and petty crimes can happen anywhere. Always use common sense and street smarts.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Luckily, most people are very friendly and willing to help travelers.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><b><i>Pro tip: <\/i><\/b>Colombia travel is easier when you know the locals. Brushing up on some basic Spanish phrases is helpful.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><b><i>Extra tip: <\/i><\/b>Many Colombian cities don&#8217;t have potable water. For example, <a href=\"https:\/\/travel.state.gov\/content\/travel\/en\/international-travel\/International-Travel-Country-Information-Pages\/Colombia.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>US<\/b><\/span><\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lonelyplanet.com\/articles\/visa-requirements-for-colombia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>EU<\/b><\/span><\/a> travelers can stay in Colombia for 90 days without a visa. However, most countries in Africa, the Middle East, and Asia require an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cancilleria.gov.co\/sites\/default\/files\/FOTOS2024\/PAISES%20QUE%20REQUIEREN%20VISA%20Y%20QUE%20EXIGEN%20VISA%20%2012%20de%20agosto%20de%202024.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>online visa<\/b><\/span><\/a>. You need a passport with at least six months of validity to enter Colombia.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Note: You may be able to extend your trip for another 90 days. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cancilleria.gov.co\/tramites_servicios\/visa\/requisitos\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span class=\"s2\"><b>Contact<\/b><\/span><\/a> the Ministry of Foreign Relationships or the Office of Migraci\u00f3n Colombia.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">All travelers need proof of a return trip out of Colombia. Airlines won\u2019t let you on a plane to Colombia without showing an exit ticket. Also, you must register your trip with <a href=\"https:\/\/apps.migracioncolombia.gov.co\/pre-registro\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span class=\"s2\"><b>CheckMig<\/b><\/span><\/a> 72 hours before going to Colombia.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">There is no immunization requirement, but it\u2019s recommended travelers get vaccinated for:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul class=\"ul1\">\n<li class=\"li1\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">COVID-19<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Yellow Fiver<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Typhoid\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\"><b>Do I need travel insurance?\u00a0<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Travel insurance isn\u2019t required, but highly recommended for a Colombia trip.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\"><b>What to pack:<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Packing depends on where you plan to visit in Colombia. Light, breathable clothing is best if in a tropical climate. Cities like Bogot\u00e1 can get chilly, so light layers or full-on jackets might be necessary. However, many travel sites like Lonely Planet say the best time to go is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lonelyplanet.com\/articles\/best-time-to-visit-colombia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span class=\"s2\"><b>between December and March<\/b><\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\"><b>How do I plan a trip to Colombia?<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Colombia has no shortage of adventures. Here are some ideas:<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><b>Adventure hike in the jungle:<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<ul class=\"ul1\">\n<li class=\"li1\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><b>Tayrona National Park: <\/b>Located in the northern Caribbean region of Colombia, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tayrona_National_Natural_Park\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span class=\"s2\"><b>Tayrona<\/b><\/span><\/a> is about 45 minutes from Santa Marta. It\u2019s part of the <b>Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta National Natural Park<\/b>. This is a popular trekking <span class=\"s2\"><b>destination<\/b><\/span> full of wildlife. You\u2019ll experience the jungle, majestic archeological ruins (the Lost City), and golden beaches.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><b>Sleep under the stars:<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<ul class=\"ul1\">\n<li class=\"li1\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><b>Tatacoa Desert: <\/b>This \u201cdry tropical forest\u201d is famous for its unique grey and red-rippled rock formations. You\u2019ll feel like you\u2019ve landed on Mars! It\u2019s prime for hiking, horseback riding, glamping, and stargazing at night. <a href=\"https:\/\/colombia.travel\/en\/blog\/discover-ultimate-bucket-list-best-tourist-attractions-colombia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span class=\"s2\"><b>Tatacoa<\/b><\/span><\/a> is about an hour away from Neiva, in southern Colombia.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><b>Have an urban adventure:<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<ul class=\"ul1\">\n<li class=\"li1\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><b>Bogot\u00e1: <\/b>Most travelers start their Colombia adventure at the El Dorado Airport in Bogot\u00e1. This is Colombia\u2019s booming capital. You can\u2019t get more urban than <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/place\/Bogota\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span class=\"s2\"><b>Bogot\u00e1<\/b><\/span><\/a>. It\u2019s sandwiched between huge mountain ranges. It\u2019s a staggering 8660 feet above sea level with over <a href=\"https:\/\/www.macrotrends.net\/global-metrics\/cities\/20837\/bogota\/population\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span class=\"s2\"><b>11 million inhabitants<\/b><\/span><\/a>. There\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lonelyplanet.com\/colombia\/bogota\/attractions\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span class=\"s2\"><b>no shortage<\/b><\/span><\/a> of restaurants, museums, and activities here. The Gold Museum, Mount Monserrat, and Iglesia de San Francisco are a handful of ideas. \u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><b>Breathtaking coastal views:<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><b>\u2022 Cartagena de las Indias: <\/b>This is one of the oldest Spanish colonial-style cities in South America. Surrounded by the Caribbean Sea, Cartagena is full of breathtaking beaches. The \u201cCity of Eternal Spring\u201d is also Colombia\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/colombia.travel\/es\/feria-flores-medellin-colombia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span class=\"s2\"><b>City of Flowers<\/b><\/span><\/a>. Its famous <a href=\"https:\/\/colombia.travel\/en\/blog\/region-best-coffee-in-world\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span class=\"s2\"><b>Coffee Zone<\/b><\/span><\/a> (Efe Cafetero) is in the Risaralda, Caldas, and Quind\u00edo departments.
